The celebration of the Year of the Rat, Chinese New Year 2008, was full of fun and exciting pageantry. It began on Friday, February 15, with the Champions’ Piano Recital, a benefit concert presented in partnership with the Chinese American International Piano Institute and the Siskiyou Institute. On Saturday, February 16, the celebration continued with a traditional Lion Dance parade and demonstrations of martial arts, Chinese cooking and calligraphy. With a nod to the 2008 Beijing Olympic, athletic events included a 5k” Rat Race,” and table tennis and Chinese yo-yo demonstrations. St. Mary’s School organized an “international tour” of activities for children. The entire event was highlighted by a performance by the Dragon Art Studio from Portland, who performed classical Chinese puppet art shows.
